The CX-9 SUV from Mazda has remained unchanged with just a minor facelift. But that’s about to change as the new 2017 Mazda CX-9 is reported to bring significant generational changes. Fortunately, Mazda has showcased the much-needed redesign at the LA Auto show.
Thankfully, the 2nd generation change of Mazda CX-9 2017 has brought a wave of change under the hood as well. The heart and soul of this new Mazda CX-9 is the 2.5-liter SKYACTIV engine which produces a desirable power of 250 HP and a torque of 310 lb-ft. Most importantly, this engine’s torque is easy to access in lower part of the revolution range as the peak torque comes in around 2,000 rpm and can even touch 4,000 rpm. There are no official confirmations to fuel economy and the numbers are expected to stay 26 mpg in city, 30 mpg on highways and 27 mpg on a combined scale.
Then there’s a 6-speed automatic transmission which plays nicely with all-wheel drive. This transmission system uses 22 different sensors and measures road conditions 200 times per second. By monitoring the road conditions, this system sends power to the axles accordingly. Meanwhile, this vehicle’s SKYACTIV architecture uses a multi-link rear suspension which has been mated with MacPherson struts (much like Mazda CX-5).
2017 Mazda CX-9 Exterior and Interior
Like every other vehicle in Mazda’s catalog, the new CX-9 wears suave styling which are all part of the company’s signature Kodo design language. This includes a redesigned grille which has an arc-like design on the bottom. This grille incorporates 5 horizontal slats that are dipped in chrome. Sitting astride to this grille are two new headlights which integrate HID projectors, LED daytime running lights and turn signals.
New muscular haunches in the hood and front wheel arches also redefine this 2017 Mazda CX-9. There’s an attractive chrome trim in the entirely new front bumper which runs on top of the air intake. The roof features roof rail-like trim on both edges which characterize a sporty profile. Nonetheless, this vehicle can be had with either 18 or 20-inch alloy wheels and 7 exterior colors. These color options include Jet Black, Sonic Silver, Machine Gray, Titanium Flash, Deep Crystal Blue, Snowflake White Pearl and Soul Red.
This new 2017 Mazda CX-9 is the perfect example of the company’s growing interior design prowess. Like the previous model, this 2017 CX-9 interior features premium aluminum trim in the dashboard along with the free standing screen. The center console is now low and wider and is a portmanteau of controls. This cabin is not just luxurious but quiet too as Mazda has used more than 54 lbs. of sound-deadening materials in the floor and door panels. Needless to say, this new CX-9 might just new the most comfortable vehicle Mazda has ever built.
Price and Competitors
