Ford is preparing its crossover utility vehicle Flex as a new model called the 2018 Ford Flex. The CUV was unveiled first in 2007 at the New York Auto International Show and came into production from 2009. After tweaking with various features, a major update came in 2013. This seven passenger vehicle, after undergoing that update, is now in its second generation which will be continued till 2019. Competition for this new Ford SUV of the year 2018 will be tough, with vehicles like Chevrolet Equinox, Kia Sorento and Jeep Grand Cherokee ready to take Flex on.
Powertrain of the 2018 Ford Flex
Under its hood, this full-sized crossover will see upgrades in its engine. That means the current 3.5 L Duratec V6 engine will be replaced by a 3.5 L EcoBoost that produces power equal to 287 HP and a torque of 254 lb-ft. This engine will have a fuel economy of 20 mpg and 27 mpg in city and highway respectively making Ford Flex 2018 quite fuel efficient.
Another engine option is being speculated, which is a 3.5 EcoBoost V6 with twin turbochargers with a power output of 365 HP and a torque of 350 lb-ft. In this case, fuel economy will be around 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on highways. In both cases, it will either be a 9 speed automatic or a 6 speed manual gearbox.
The 2018 Ford Flex will see some changes from its current models but major updates are not supposed to happen since this generation will be continued until 2019. But few a enhancements are to be carried out. For starters, a new grille on the front adorned with chrome along with LED headlight that functions during daytime will be seen in Ford Flex 2018 model.
Bumper on the front face will get larger than its current version while rear bumper will see dual chrome exhaust tips. Expect a shift in platform, with Flex ditching Ford’s D3 for the C6 platform, which will help it lose a lot of weight, reason for it being more fuel economical.
Interiors of the new Flex
Insides of the 2018 Ford Flex will get more luxurious and elegant. Leather covered seats will be the minimum standard in all variants while amenities like Bluetooth connectivity, satellite navigation and an upgraded infotainment system like SYNC3 is expected instead of My Ford. However, the touchscreen of only 4.2 inches might be considered, which is a bit small for the crossover.
Ford Flex 2018 comes with a host of safety features which include forward collision warning, rear view camera for parking assistance and blind-spot monitoring. Six airbags are provided in the cabin in case of collisions.
Expected arrival and probable price
The 2018 Ford Flex will be out sometime in mid-2018, or maybe in the third quarter of 2018. Price will be similar to the current model, with minor differences due to upgrades. Expect the base model to cost a little above $30,000 and premium models to cost upwards of $45,000.
